个人简历
  陈之端,男,1964年5月生,1985年毕业于山东大学生物系。1992年在中国科学院植物研究所获得博士学位,并留所工作,先后任研究实习员、助理研究员、副研究员,1997年起任研究员,1999年起任博士生导师。目前担任中国科学院植物研究所系统与进化植物学国家重点实验室植物大数据与生物多样性保护研究团队负责人。1995年在美国佛罗里达大学进行合作研究。1995、1999、2000、2002和2006年曾分别在美国佛罗里达大学、瑞士苏黎世大学、英国邱园、美国哈佛大学和美国华盛顿史密森研究所进行合作研究。
  近年来一直从事植物系统发育重建和生物地理学方面的研究,即利用多学科的手段,在较高分类阶元上,探讨植物的系统发育关系和演化,并将形态学、古植物学、分子系统学以及生物地理学的研究结果相结合,研究植物类群的起源、分化和现代地理格局及其成因。目前的主要研究工作集中在:
  (1) 利用基因、基因组、形态学以及生物地理学等证据探讨被子植物大类群的系统发育和进化; 
  (2) 利用生命之树,研究植物区系及其生物多样性的时空格局和形成机制。
  曾主持完成过国家自然科学基金委青年基金和美国国家地理学会(NGF)基金项目各1项,国家自然科学基金委面上项目三项,中国科学院指示创新方向性项目一项,还分别与路安民研究员和吴征镒院士共同主持过国家基金委重点项目各一项,作为合作者与美国密西根大学仇寅龙博士合作完成一项国家基金委海外青年学者合作基金项目。参加科技部国家重点基础研究发展计划项目(973)和国家自然科学基金委基金重点项目各一项。在AJB、LJPS、MBE、MPE、Nature、NP、PNAS、PPEES、Taxon等刊物发表论文200余篇。2005年获云南省自然科学一等奖一项(本人排名第二),发表在Nature的研究成果入选2018年度“中国生命科学十大进展”。

主要成绩

一、被子植物大类群系统发育关系研究(Macrosystematics

       植物大类群的系统发育,即大系统,是指科级及其以上阶元水平上分类群之间的系统演化关系。近年来,随着植物分子系统学的发展,人们先后在叶绿体基因组、核基因组及线粒体基因组均发现了一些进化速率较慢,适合用于科级以上分类等级研究的基因,如叶绿体基因rbcLatpBndhF, 核核糖体18S rRNA26S rRNA基因,以及线粒体基因matRatp等。由于这些基因使得大规模的取样成为可能,因此可以非常容易地在目、亚纲水平、以至整个被子植物中对众多科之间的系统关系进行研究。这种研究可以较为有效地确定一些系统位置不定类群的归属;以及研究那些不为单系的一些科的系统发育关系。目前,rbcL基因序列已成功地用于整个种子植物的系统发育,可以同时对近3000种植物进行比较,在原来形态学研究的基础上,得到了一系列非常重要的结论,为我们深入地理解被子植物各大类群之间的关系提供了大量证据。我们发现,原来认为一些互不相干的类群却紧密地结合在一起,而一些过去被认为较近的类群却并不相干。

       自1997年,我们开始用形态结合分子生物学的方法研究大类群之间的关系,如先后对中国特有的马尾树科、分类地位不明的五福花科、壳斗目、续断目、蔷薇类进行了探讨,取得了有意义的证据。1998年,我作为年轻一代植物分类学的后学和老一辈植物学家吴征镒、汤彦承、路安民共同发表了“试论木兰植物门的一级分类------一个被子植物八纲系统的新方案”,最近又发表了“被子植物的一个多系-多期-多域新分类系统总览”(吴征镒、路安民、汤彦承、陈之端、李德铢,2002)。1999年,在瑞士苏黎世大学Qiu Yin-Long教授的分子系统学实验室,我参与了同时用二个叶绿体基因、一个核基因和二个线粒体基因(共约9000个碱基对)来研究基部被子植物各科之间的关系,令人信服地提出ANITA代表了最早的现存的被子植物,研究结果发表在NatureInternational Journal of Plant Science上(Qiu et al., 1999, 2000)。我们开展的一个国家自然科学基金课题 “高等金缕梅类植物的分子系统发育和进化”,完成用六个基因的核苷酸序列探讨该类群的系统发育(Li et al., 2004)。同时,利用线粒体基因matR研究高等金缕梅类各科以及与之有关的其他蔷薇类群之间的关系,涉及130余科。该项工作在英国邱园Mark W. Chase教授的分子系统学实验室和我们的系统和进化植物学国家重点实验室取得了大量数据,完成了177种植物matR基因测序工作。结果显示,该基因对于蔷薇类的目级分类特别有效,并确定了一些中国特有类群的系统位置(Zhu et al., 2007)。近年来,我们课题组还采用多个基因,对桦木科和续断目等进行了深入研究,结果分别发表在American Journal of BotanyMolecular Phylogenetics and Evolution等国际学术刊物上(Chen et al., 1999;Zhang et al., 2003)。2002年,与美国密西根大学的仇寅龙博士、本所张宪春和贾渝先生合作,得到国家自然科学基金委海外杰出青年基金项目资助,利用多个基因对40个苔藓和蕨类植物特有属展开工作,合作研究结果发表在Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USAAnnals of the Missouri Botanical GardenInternational Journal of Plant Sciences(Qiu et al., 2006;Li et al., 2007;Liu et al., 2008)。

二、在属级水平上的分子生物地理学研究(Molecular Biogeography)

       在属级水平上,我们采用整合形态、分子和地理的方法探讨一个属或关系非常密切的几个属中不同类群之间的关系、起源和分化的式样。对于那些化石证据较为可靠和丰富的类群,我们还结合古植物学证据研究类群起源和分歧的时间,以及分化的次序,并与分子钟提供的时间相互印证。在此类研究中,我们首先在形态分类学研究的基础上,用一至几个适合用于属内研究的基因序列重建各种类之间的系统发育关系,继而结合各终端类群的地理分布式样及类群分布的各地球板块离合时间,探讨属的起源地、起源时间、散布路线和现代分布式样形成的原因。同时通过大量类群分子生物地理学的迭合分析,还可以发现植物演化过程中所发生的一些大的一般性的地理分布式样,形态进化和分子进化的速率,以及与之有关的地质事件和气候变迁。

       从1995年起,我们课题组和美国佛罗里达大学的古植物学家Steven R. Manchester教授和David L. Dilcher院士一直保持着实质性的合作,通过古今结合,形态与分子方法结合对“高等”金缕梅类的科进行细致的研究。目前,在分子生物地理学方面,本课题组还对五味子科,金粟兰科,菊科毛冠菊属,桦木科桤木属,小檗科鬼臼亚科和茄科天仙子亚族等类群进行了研究。在国家基金委重点项目“东亚植物区系中主要特征成分和重要类群的形成和发展”中,我们承担了其中的分子生物地理学部分,除上述属外,还对一些环太平洋分布的科属,如木通科、清风藤科泡花树属,以及代表其他一些重要分布式样的属,如壳斗科水青冈属、鼠李科马甲子属、Melanthiaceae的岩菖蒲属和藜芦属开展研究。

  三、形态性状的进化发育生物学研究(Evolutionary Developmental Biology)

       自林奈时代以来的二百多年里,人们对各种生物的形态学特征的了解已是相当的全面、细致和深入。近十几年来,分子系统学的迅猛发展可使我们非常有效地研究各种基因在不同分类群的核苷酸序列变异。然而分子性状和形态性状,即基因型和表型之间仍然存在着不可逾越的鸿沟,目前,我们尚不能从分子水平上对大多数类群中的大量的形态学性状进行解释。令人兴奋地是,近年来随着越来越多植物叶绿体基因组、线粒体基因组和核基因组的全序列测定的完成,人们对基因功能的认识随之增多。特别是控制花发育的ABC模型的提出,让我们看到了利用发育生物学手段研究进化问题是一个广阔的领域。尽管目前在世界范围内Evo-Devo研究仍处在初期发展阶段,但它预示的前景是多少代系统与进化生物学家所梦寐以求的。填补基因型和表型之间的鸿沟,为我们进一步揭开形形色色生物界的起源和演化的奥秘,同时也为人类更好地开发和利用植物资源带来了无限希望。

       本课题组曾在扫描电镜下,观察研究了各类植物花器官的原基形成和分化过程,已注意到了与大类群起源有关的一些关键性状在不同分类群中的变异。在此基础上,我们与本所发育中心的孟征研究员合作,选择金粟兰、五味子、木通、小檗、领春木、葡萄等被子植物各大分支的代表植物,研究在花各发育阶段与花被、心皮等性状分化和变异的有关基因,了解这些基因的进化与植物系统发育之间的关系。这些工作的目的首先是在我们的工作中建立起进化发育生物学的方法,以期将来能够利用这种方法对各类性状,甚至包括一些营养性状开展深入的研究。目前,该项工作在国家自然科学基金委创新群体项目和中科院知识创新重要方向性项目的资助下已取得了一定的进展。目前,已与孔宏智研究员和孟征研究员合作,对控制花部器官发育的关键基因进行了研究,探讨了关键花部性状起源和演化的分子机理。目前在Molecular Biology and EvolutionNew PhytologistMolecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 和 Development Genes and Evolution等刊物上发表论文四篇。

       二十多年来,课题组在路安民、汤彦承和潘开玉等研究员的组织领导下,在被子植物大系统研究方面,在理论上具有自己的研究思路,在实践上建立了一整套比较形态学(广义,包括花形态发生、解剖、胚胎、孢粉学等)和分子系统学实验方法。积累了丰富经验,取得了丰硕成果。如今这个研究集体在尊重传统的基础上,通过广泛的国内外合作,不断探索新的研究方向,使得研究不仅兴趣盎然,而且充满了挑战和希望。
